A new and prestigious recognition for Michele Satta winery: the Piastraia 2022 has been included by James Suckling, one of the world’s most influential wine critics, in the *Top 100 Italian Wines*.
This achievement once again confirms the value of the work carried out by the historic Bolgheri estate, founded in 1983 by Michele Satta and now led by his son Giacomo.
First produced in 1994, Piastraia has become one of the winery’s most iconic labels and one of the earliest authentic expressions of the Bolgheri terroir. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sangiovese, with the 2022 vintage it sees for the first time the addition of 10% Cabernet Franc — a testament to the estate’s ongoing pursuit of balance and identity. 
James Suckling described the Piastraia 2022 as: “intense, vibrant and stylish. On the nose, it shows cassis, bramble fruits, eucalyptus, balsamic notes, graphite, minerals, and hints of leather and tobacco. On the palate, it is smooth, with silky and velvety tannins, crisp acidity, and a long, full-bodied, savory finish. Drink now or hold”.
“Being included in James Suckling’s selection is a source of great pride,” commented Giacomo Satta. “The 2022 vintage was marked by very little rainfall and high temperatures, so we significantly reduced yields to enhance quality. Under these conditions, Merlot and Cabernet — Bolgheri’s key varietals — express themselves with remarkable elegance and complexity.”
The entry of Piastraia 2022 into this prestigious ranking marks yet another milestone for Michele Satta and for the entire Bolgheri region.
